The number of people in the United States over 65 has only increased over time dueto technology and medical advancements. Many federal programs are being putinto places to assist the elderly population.
Although people are now living longer, they sometimes don’t have the mental or physical capacity to deal with certain issues. These issues may include financial or legal decisions that they may face, which is why in most cases it’s a good idea for the elderly to have an attorney.
3 tips we always share with our clients for choosing the right attorney to serve an aging parent are:
- Try to get a referral from friends or family: Asking for referrals from people that you trust is a good way to find the right attorney. If they say that they would work with that attorney again, then it’s a good indication of whether or not they are a good attorney. If you can get a referral from someone who is in a similar situation to yours, that would be ideal. Referrals are also a good place to start looking for an attorney that meets your needs.
- Have an initial meeting: One of the best ways to get to know a professional and their process is to meet them in person. Some attorneys offer meetings and strategy sessions for a brief amount of time for no charge. However, some law offices insist on filling out questionnaires and even reading materials before meeting for free. Meeting with them in person gives you a feel of their personality and if they and their process will work well with you or your loved ones.
- Ask about their experience: It’s always good to work with an attorney that has a lot of experience. It’s even better if they have experience with situations similar to yours. If they have worked in situations similar, then you will be able to ask how they handled the situation. Having questions for the attorney when you meet them is a good way to get to know how they handle things.
